I went here a month ago on my way home from work. i was craving for burger and I decided to check this place out. It's just like the other burger joint where you put your own toppings on. I took it To-Go. The Burger was actually really good and the staff was really nice also. I will go back here if I want a burger.
I'm a firm believer in rating restaurants within their category. This is a fast-food type burger joint, and as far as fast-food burger joints go, it's a darn good one.
Don't come here expecting a gourmet, blow-your-mind burger. That's not Belly's style. But you can expect to get a decently thick patty that's waaay better than stopping in at McDonald's. I have no complaints about the quality of the food or the service. Decent stuff.
I wasn't thrilled with the idea of grabbing my burger with the same hands I used to touch the self-service toppings utensils that other people had been touching all day. Somebody could sneeze into their hand and then decide they want some more tomato. :P
Anyway, maybe this is slightly OCD, but I asked for the bathroom key so I could wash my hands before eating. Ladies know that restaurant bathrooms can sometimes be pretty scary, but I was pleasantly surprised at how clean Belly Burger is. It was a very clean and inviting bathroom. I don't know how many people choose a place to eat based on the cleanliness of its restrooms, but I'm just throwing it out there. It was clean. I was glad.
I will come here for a burger again.

This is the type of place where I actually like their food... and they're located no more than a block away from my apartment... but there's just something missing that makes me want to choose Belly's over, let's say, Gordo.
Yes, I realize they serve completely different types of food. But both are "go-to" types of eating establishments and one is winning out over the other.
They have some great combination deals. You can get a hearty burger, fries and a large soda for $6.95. Outside of BK-Have-It-Your-Way, you won't find something as fair-priced. Today's special included a salmon burger which I was quite curious about... but those Chic-Fil-A commercials made me want to seek revenge on cows so I went for a beefy burger instead.
The condiments bar is their prized possession. They have jalapenos, pineapple slices, two different types of lettuce and many other enticing goodies. The spicy mustard is also a great option; I love places that provide diversity in mustards.
The minor set backs are the lack of free refills (who does that any more?) and the decor doesn't feel right. Maybe if the place was larger and had booths I would think "yeah, this is cool" but the set up doesn't make me want to stay and hang out long.
But if you do like the digs and decide to stay awhile, they apparently have free wi-fi. Tap that.

Belly Burger is a family owend business that on a consistent basis serves clean fresh food in a traditional burger atmosphere. Prices are reasonable. This is a staple in a great neighborhood!
when it comes to how my burger is prepared i am VERY picky. i like the bun to be slightly toasted which it is at belly. i can't stand american cheese so i love that i can order cheddar here! when you order the avocado burger they hook it up! the avocado is soo fresh and perfectly cut so it doesn't fall off the burger. i loove the fact that i can put my own toppings on because i can pick the best ones and put however much on i want! all the ingredient toppings are extremely fresh by the way. there are three types of lettuce to choose from, the tomatoes are big, and they have three types of onions to choose from as well. the patty is substantial and juicy. they even have a cute retro decor and cute back patio. if you're in the richmond you must try this place!

I came here yesterday for the first time after wondering about it for so long. Anyway onto the review:
We got a #1 combo (hamburger, fries, coke) and a cheeseburger . The service was pretty good, the cashier was probably the owner from the looks of and and it seems like he works hard.
The do it yourself/self serve bar for toppings was what got me. I piled up lots of lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. The toppings were very fresh and plentiful.
The beef patty was pretty burnt and charred. It looked like it was pre-cooked and then heated up again on the grill. Maybe Im wrong. I checked both burgers and they were made exactly the same, both overcooked/burnt!
On top of that, we didnt even get natural beef. Natural beef is an extra $.75. That is such a bad idea. Why would you post a sign stating that natural beef will cost extra? It makes customers like me who get the normal beef feel like Im eating crap.
The fries were better than Mcdonalds/BK/fastfood default fries though. They put weird nacho cheese type sauce on "cheese fries" so beware.
Prices were okay but overall it was disappointing. The burger wasn't hot as I expected and it was overcooked or cooked again after it was sitting around. I love the do it yourself toppings but I don't think it would save the patty if it tastes like charcoal.
I'll be back to see if they still burn their burgers.

This joint has a nice vibe, and as I was eating, I couldn't have been happier, but as I'm looking back on it, the food wasn't that great. Sure it's a step up from burgerking and places like that. There just wasn't that pizazz I'd expect from a place named "belly burger".

I can't believe anyone would think this is a good burger. It actually tasted like one of those frozen Safeway hockey pucks. Oh yeah, it was burnt too.
There are a lot of good burger joints in this town, this is not one of them.

Simple, but very good burgers. The fries are perfect.
I love Belly Burger! The owner is amazingly nice guy and everyone who works there is extremely cordial.
As for the food..the burgers are cooked on some kind of volcanic rock that gives them a delicious outdoor grilled taste. The fries are perfect. Two people can share one bag of fries, it's huge. The toppings bar is totally fresh. Water is free. That's all I've ever had but they do have an extensive menu with a lot of burger joint type stuff.
Parking is right next door in a public lot and the 38 Geary bus stops right on the corner. They close at 10 pm.
There's a flat screen tv, usually with a game on, sometimes the news or a kid friendly movie. The place is super clean and family friendly. If I'm having a burger in the Richmond, this is where I go. Prices are about the same as a fast food place with much better quality. Great place!
**Update: Last time I was there I noticed they have sweet potato fries and some other non burger joint stuff, as well as a huge garden salad, so I have to say, better and better. The place is a real addition to the Richmond!

Four stars for Belly? I'm sorry folks. This is just ridiculous. This is what's wrong with Yelp. There's those of you that are just too nice and give everyone and they mama 4 or 5 stars. Fair enough nice guy, but you're screwing up the rating system. Then there are those who think good burgers come on 99 cent value menus, and to them Belly is top notch.
To sum my experience at Belly, there's nothing special about the joint. The mushroom burger I had was decent. You can't really mess up a mushroom cheeseburger, but you can make it lip-smacking-foodgasmic-good. No foodgasm at Belly. Maybe it would help if you toast the bun? What really turned me off was the wilted lettuce that was getting that ill shade of brown at the condiment bar. Sorry folks, there's nothing four stars about that.

Second time here the other day.
Good burger.
Good toasted bun.
pre-cooked bacon on the "Belly Burger"...
...and not even good bacon...
The "Belly Burger" is your signature burger.
Why NOT cook the bacon, mushrooms, and onions to order?
Especially if its 3pm on a weekday?
Ordered clam chowder....
Tasted like watered down Progresso chowder mixed with watered
down Progresso cream of mushroom. Do not order.
I am a onion ring freak.
Ordered those....
SLAMMIN!
Every district needs at least a couple decent burger joints.
This one is good enough for repeat visits.
They even let us get our burger on with a twelver of brews sitting on
the table next to us. Isn't that worth another star?
I ate here for the first time, and had actually been wanting to try it. It's lame but I kept seeing ads in SF Weekly for this place, so my interest was piqued. The joint has an almost retro-50's diner vibe- but no stools, no Moxie and none of those goofy little hats they wear- and an unusually U-shaped "help yo'self" fixins bar chock full of fresh sliced veggies (3 lettuce types!), salad fixins (?) and a butt-load of condiment options. Strange, but I wasn't even sure if I'm allowed on the other side of the bar... where the soda fountain is... it looks like the workers' side of the counter... can I go there, dude? Anyway, I didn't. I got the BBQ Cheeseburger. To some surprise, the cashier/server/cook/owner (?) brought out our burgers on these GIANT round plates. They looked like HUGE upside-down frisbees, and my burger looked so teeny sitting there in all it's bbq'd glory. I wasn't impressed though. To me, my burger (the-non-natural-beef-for-an-extra-75-cent-kind) tasted like a store bought frozen patty with store bought bottled bbq sauce (which was slathered liberally, btw) I added a bunch of veggies though, so it wasn't awful. The dude I met up with later recommended Bill's Burgers around the corner. Shameless, I know.
As far as bang for your buck goes, I haven't found a better place in the Outer Richmond for a burger (this statement could apply to the whole of SF but there is a lot out there that I haven't tried).
Belly offers a lot of good options for your burger. I like to get the avocado burger with pepper jack cheese and add bacon or just order the standard cheese burger combo and make it up Fat Burger style with relish and the shedder lettuce. The great thing about this place is the options; they have all the fix'ns laid out in front of you. It is almost like being at a family BBQ. I start planning my burger or hot dog the second I walk in and it is really fun to think about all the options you can put together.
The support food is good too. Fries, onion rings, chili, and shakes all stand up to similar competition.
I also like the back patio. It is nice on sunny days and it kind of reminds me of a place I go to a bit back home.
In the right setting, I could see this place turning into a local chain or maybe even franchise.

Belly Burger... never again.
I had the fish and chips (minus the chips), which were the frozen pre-breaded type... I am almost 100% sure the fish was not fresh and in fact opposite of fresh. My fiance had the the garden burger and fries which I had a bite of and we both concluded that it was very bland.
Their tarter sauce was literally watered down mayonnaise, tiny bits of pickle, and no tartary taste. I ordered a side salad to replace my fries and it was $7 for the salad bar; however it wasn't a salad bar. The vegetables laid out were mainly for the sandwich/burgers. So my salad consisted of pickles, lettuce, and mushrooms. Our entire dinner was $26.
I would definitly not go back here. Expensive burgers with no taste to back it up.
And to top it off, the atmosphere at Belly Burger probably made the whole eating experience even more miserable. I was surprised to see this restaurant has an average of 4/5 stars.... There was barely anybody in there, so it felt very gloomy. There was a flat screen tv mounted on the wall and they had CNN on.... fun and not depressing at all.
I give Belly Burger 2 stars because their fries were good but it's hard to mess up french fries.

I thought Belly's Burger was pretty good. This is what I am looking for in a burger more than Bill's Place. I know Bill's Place has been around forever but I just feel like the Belly's patty was more tightly packed and the meat not as loose like Bill's does it and the "meaty" taste of Belly's is more what I personally look for.
So though Bill's Place, a couple blocks away, has been there forever and is a neighborhood icon and some may even consider a San Francisco institution, I think I would rather come here to get my burger and fry fix........
7 Oz Patties cooked to medium-well are what you get and over 18 toppings to choose from in their condiment bar.....
$4.85 buys you a cheesburger and if you elect for the Combo Meal (CB, Fries and Drink), the damage will be $7.45
Kate and I decided to forego our old burger stand bys: Bills, and In 'n Out and try Belly Burger since we are pretty darn close to it. In the end it just doesn't stand up to either one. The shake was okay. The burger was too salty by far, and I didn't get the feeling the fries were made in house. As for the option of organic, grassfed meat, I went for it on my burger and well, the salt made it impossible to tell if it was better. As for the condiment bar, I think Wendy's has almost as many choices.
Sorry, this one goes on Kate's and my "not need to go back there unless all the burger places in San Francisco magically disappear." I guess if I was Michael Bauer, I'd go back for a second try. I'm not though :()

Four of us came over from work and the service was pretty fast. It's nice having a patio out back to hang out when there is sun in the Richmond District.
One of us had a burger, another had a veggie burger, one had a salad & I had the chilli. All in all, I'd say it's just OK. No crackers with Chilli? No bread with Chilli? You have to buy Chips to go with the Chilli!
Belly Burger deserves 3.75 stars. My boyfriend and I walk into Belly Burger and didn't see anyone at the counter to take our order. As we walk to the empty cash register, a girl comes out of almost nowhere and greets us. (I think she was reading at one of the side tables during her downtime.) The menu offers hamburgers with cheese, bacon, mushrooms, avocados and the Belly Burger is one with the works! I settle for a cheese burger with jack cheese and mushrooms (yum, jack cheese!) and french fries and onion rings.
The decor is not much to speak of, but wasn't expecting much from a small burger joint. There is a wall full of '50's inspired tin posters advertising coca cola, ketchup, home cooking and the like. A tv is on on the opposite wall and it's turned onto a game show.
Ten minutes pass and we're presented with our burgers. We're advised to put all the toppings we want on them from the condiments bar. The bar had everything-- iceberg and green leaf lettuce, red and yellow onions, jalapenos, relish, pickles, sprouts and kidney beans (yes, kidney beans...in case someone wants a kidney bean on their burger?!) and a few others.
The moment of truth--a decent burger! The mushrooms, cheese, and the toppings from the bar were on point. The beef was tasty, but I realized they didn't ask how I wanted it cooked and it was a bit rarer than I prefer it (I like it medium well). Wonder if I should have paid the extra $0.75 for the angus beef. The bun wasn't anything special, and would probably benefit from a nice toasting.
I'll go again cause there's so many different burgers you can come away with. Maybe I'll request the bun toasted and ask for the angus beef medium well.
great place to go if you live in the neighborhood and want a good burger and fries.
The price is right and the burger is made on a circular grill not a hot plate - which adds flavor.
there is a fixin' bar with lettuce, pickles etc... the atmosphere is clean -- it's great to pop in and have a quick bite.. especially beats a franchise.
Bills place is good too.. but always look greasy and a little dirty to me...
I was browsing yelp for another decent burger place.I read some reviews and thought to give this place a try.We got take out. However, there is a parking lot to the left of Belly Burger, but I think it would proably be packed during certain hours. The menu offers many options and the place reminds me of Sliders.
I got a Cheeseburger.Yep,just that and no fries.Let me tell you this burger was tasty, juicy and somewhat thick. It was perfect and well considering I was hungry at the time.I would say come here and try it out.The menu offers plenty of options:Veggie Burger,Italian Chicken Sandwhich,Grilled Ham & Cheese,Hot Dogs,Combo Meals and sides.
I enjoyed Belly Burger and I would go back to taste more of what is on the menu.
Tasty.

The burgers are very good. Much better than Sliders. I've eaten here quite often when I want to order for take out. However, the last time I went the guy at the counter (who I later found was the owner) was a jerk. If you want a good burger give them a shot. I personally won't go back because the owner was a rude debbie downer.
Nice neighborhood environment. A secret tip: they have a nice plasma on the wall for PLAYOFF FOOTBALL! First time there, had the turkey burger and chilli cheese fries. To be honest, that was enough food for two! I loved the fact that I could add infinite sprouts and mushrooms after I got my burger. Strongly recommend if you are in the area! Very nice girl at the counter too.

Hot, delicious burgers topped off with the toppings of your choice. Keep it simple or make it complex. Put as little onto it or pile it high with your favorite fixings.
I finally found an opportunity to drop in this afternoon. I ordered the Cheeseburger Combo #2 which came out to $8.08. That's pretty inexpensive for a lot of food and a soft drink. The posted weight of the burgers prior to cooking is 7 ounces, and they give you a gigantic order of fries to go with it. You have your choice of cheese too. I went with the Pepper Jack. My burger and fries were ready in a little more than five minutes. With lots of toppings to choose from ... I had alfalfa sprouts, fresh mushrooms, leaf lettuce and sliced tomato. The burger was cooked a bit well; I would have preferred the meat just a tad redder, but this was an excellent burger. There were so many fries I ended up wasting some.
The lady who takes the orders and brings you your food was quite friendly. The restroom was very clean also although the floor was a bit sticky. There is a big screen television with the volume turned up so you can enjoy the sports programming, or you can catch up on the current events with several newspapers on a rack. I'll be back.

I knew it, this is Korean.
When I walked in, there is a Flat TV on the wall, a girl eating a bowl of rice and kimchee with chopsticks, and the Asian guy was lookin' at me.

They don't smile.
They don't smile especially to a Japo-Man

So I ordered a New York Steak Sandwiche.
But, this son of bitch didn't ask me anything about how I like the steak cook.
But, I didn't say anything, I kinda trust him
I have to be moderate at this situation, I won't piss him off.

Steak was just PERFECT!
A JUICY MEDIUM RARE!
I do NOT "well-done-beef- steak", that's suck.

I've found Belly Burgers to be kind of hit-or-miss. Today I ordered a number one combo (burger, fries, and a soda). The fries were overdone (crunchy, but not in a good way). They don't ask you how done you want your burger. Mine was tasty but a bit too "well done" for my liking. What I do like about this place is you can pick and choose your own toppings, the veggie toppings appear very fresh, and they give you plenty of fries. One more negative thing...never, EVER order the cheese fries. They take an order of fries and then drown it in that funky nacho cheese sauce you find at 7-11. Yuck.

If based on burger alone, they'd get 5 stars. Best burger I've had in the city, hands down. I got the "Natural Beef" option for 75 cents more, only because I was frightened of the thought of eating Beef that is Not Natural...something about it just seemed weird.
Anyhow, the fries were pretty good too. Nothing to write home about, but they were big enough that you could taste the potato (I'm not a fan of shoestrings) and cooked perfectly.
The add-your-own toppings thing is cool in theory, but this place is a little lacking in execution. I say this because I just felt awkward all around when we chose to eat in the outdoor patio area. We went back there and Gramma shuffled the kids out of sight (I'm guessing family, this place has to be family-owned) so I felt like I ruined the kids' play time. Then when our burgers were brought out to us, we had to take them back inside to put condiments on them...and there's no table to set your plate down on whilst gathering your condiments.
The burger; however, makes up for all of that. Had a tiny bit of char taste (in a good way) to it and the avocado was just the correct amount of ripe-ness :)
Go to Belly and give them your money, because I'd like to see this place hang around (this is the 3rd business that's been in that spot since I moved here 2 years ago).

Any place that thinks it's ok to put nacho cheese on fries does NOT get 4 or 5 stars under ANY circumstances. The idea of the condiment bar is great but most of the fixin's were gone when we were there. No dijon mustard either? Chicken sandwich was ok. Prices seem reasonable on some items and outrageous on others for no reason. It tries. It fails.
They serve a good veggie burger, really good onion rings and the shakes are great! the toppings bar is full of odd but delicious vegetables... atmosphere is kind of cheezy and not too comfy, but for a cheap meal it does the job! the service was so-so....all in all, if you are in outer richmond, surrounded by asian cuisine, looking for a burger.... this is the place to be!!
You want a run of the mill burger, that's cooked to order, here ya go. It really wasn't anything special, and the onion rings were just ok. Kudos to having the stacked condiment bar, though, that's a plus. If I were to go back, I'd try a shake, saw the girl making one, and dang did it look tasty.
I'm making my own Excellence in Burger Making awards and I am giving the prize for "Most Photogenic Patty" to Belly. If you've been blessed with a view of this fantastic piece of meat graced under beautiful San Francisco sunlight, you'll know what's up. Just look at my pictures!!!
Fortunately, Belly burgers doesn't just win shallow points, there's substance in every bite! So many bites that I didn't finish.
Belly burgers are made of Angus beeef cooked on this big circular grill similar to the one they use at Mo's. Whatever that thing is, it makes super nice grill marks and it cooks my meat good! They don't ask you how you want your patty done, but it's medium by default. And it's a good medium that this medium rare eater here is happy with.
The buns are buttered and toasted golden. It has a generous meat to burger ratio, which wins a truck of points in my book. It look me a long time to eat this burger, and my bun didn't get soggy.
The burgers are pretty much naked when you get them, unless you order cheese. I think they can work on the presentation of the toppings bar, Sliders do this too, but their offerings make Belly unique. There's alfalfa sprouts, which I love, and pineapple slices--which I have to go back and try.
I think for me, their fries is their weak point. I'm not really a fan of in-between fries, is it steak? or is it skinny? Not sure, but there were loads of it and I think it needs more crunch and flavor.
There's a big lcd tv here so you won't be bored if you were out on a solo burger fix. I think Belly can also use a few more tables for better ambiance.
So for now, I am leaving my review as a 4 until I do a back to back visit to Belly again and my favorite burger spot Bill's up the street. Don't worry tho, so far the results are lookin' fine.

It's nice to have a new burger option in the Richmond, cos there seems to be a lack of good ones in the 'hood! I'd say Belly Burger is my current neighboorhood favorite.
We almost always choose the "Natural Beef" option for 75 more, which essentially naturally fed Angus beef without hormones or antibiotics. Worth the upgrade, if you ask me!
I have so far never been asked how I want my burger cooked, but they seem to do a good job.
The condiment bar seems very well maintained. The veggies never look tired, they're always fresh.
Although this place is conducive to eating in (or in their kinda sparse patio/garden in the back), they make it easy for you to take your order to go. I've called ahead on occasion and they've had my burgers ready for me when I come in, ready for me to add condiments, and they'll wrap it up real quick-like for me so I can be on my merry way. It also helps that the staff has always been very friendly to us.
Their fries are a great complement to the burger, nice and crispy. Although, I think I personally prefer the fries at Buffalo Burger (up the street near 17th Ave.) that are of a thicker cut.

Long story short: I was't very impressed. Bonus psychic guess: people must like this place for its meat. (They serve somethin-somethin brand beef, and will sell you organic beef for $.75 extra, which I reckon's laudable. How about jacking everything up $.50 and dropping the GMOs, though?)
I strolled in here one day after a nice walk and had a veggie burger, some fries, and a 7-Up. Granted, you've got a bit of an uphill climb to make a veggie burger interesting. But I will give you a lot of credit for at least looking like you're trying. They are set up kind of like Slider's, with a flame grill and a DIY condiment stand. But every time I've eaten at S., (a) there was a lot more variety (and quantity) in said stand, (b) the tomatoes didn't terrify me with their shade of nuclear meltdown yellow-orange, (c) I walked out the door with at least two more dollars than I did this time. I paid nine-something for a veggie burger, fries, and a can of cancer. Say wha?
Oh, it seems like an all right place... I don't really mind that the guy seemed mysteriously harried and forgot my drink. I don't really mind that it just feels like a "me too" sort of place, though I kind of mind that the prices reflect a "boutique burger" joint. I am a little bummed to have heard the guy telling another customer he had no plans of installing tables on the nice patio in back (because THERE is a reason I might spend an extra dollar to eat my burger).
In short, I'd rather go to Buffalo Burger down the street (Geary & 17th), where the tomato may never be ripe, but the fries taste like spuds, and cheese on a veggie burger doesn't cost twice as much as cheese on beef does. Belly, shmelly.

I was a little sad to see the little Chinese takeout place that was here before Belly Burger opened go, but after coming back a few times, I'm more than pleased with the replacement.
The ambiance is not much to look at, but the burgers are delicious! Generous size, meaty, sufficiently juicy, and fresh. Nothing like the fast food fare, and they beat the nearby Bill's place hands down. I really like the condiment bar - a free run of all kinds of fresh veggies & addons with every burger. Yum!
The other fare is so-so. Service was always fast and friendly.
I'd give them 4 stars for this neighborhood, if not for the Buffalo Burgers just up Geary.
Ordered two mushroom burgers along with a side of fries to go. It didn't take that long to prepare and I like how they advertise they use natural ingredients. Anyway, the plasma tv screen showing a Golden State Warriors game was a good distraction while I was waiting for my order. The lady at the counter taking orders seemed nice and told me that the condiments were self-serve. Boy did that burger taste nice though. A nice meal after a good workout. You got me sold on the Angus meat. It was Belly good.
